When voters from the fourth congressional district go to the polls this November, they will choose between Republican Christopher Shays, who has represented the district for twenty-one years, and Democrat Jim Himes, a former businessman and current nonprofit executive who is making his first run for national public office. Two years ago, Shays narrowly defeated former Westport First Selectman Diane Farrell. This year the race has drawn national attention, since Connecticut is the only one of the six states in New England still represented by a Republican congressman. It has been targeted again by the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee as a potential “red to blue” win and called a toss-up. In mid-July, both candidates were interviewed separately about their views on key issues and why they think voters should pick them instead of their opponent. October waits so patiently in the wings. Sandwiched between September’s meltdown from summer vacations and November’s anxiety to prepare for the holidays, October offers an interlude of serenity. It is a month that softly beckons us to take life a bit slower. When nature swabs the landscape with autumn’s iridescent colors, savor some time alone, taking a few days off to experience places far from the madding crowds. In the following pages, we offer three excursions that interlace some fun things to do while basking in a life less frantic. We take you on a wine trail in the Quiet Corner of Connecticut, through the art scene in the culturally rich Berkshires of western Massachusetts, and to the health-enhancing mineral waters of spa-rich Saratoga Springs, New York.
